One thing I vowed last summer was to find something to occupy my time this summer. As I said in my previous post I discovered some anxiety issues that were exacerbated by all the free time. I had nothing to do but sit around and think bad thoughts. It may be giving into my compulsive behavior but I need to have things planned out. Oceans of free time is not a good thing for me to have thus I found myself at the Houston Museum of Natural Science today for an interview.
It went well, but not the way I imagined. My imagination and expectations had carved out a path. I would go in twice a week, maybe three times, work from 9 to 5, do some office work, stuff envelopes, work on the computer, organize, file, all the boring tedious jobs that I am quite good at. I wouldn't be out in the museum interacting with the patrons and definitely not interacting with the kids (this is my vacation after all) and once the summer was over I would return back to work and would volunteer again next summer.
Except things didn't quite work out the way I imagined. I started down the path that imagination and expectation had carved out and then took a hard left about 10 minutes in. I'm very excited and a little nervous about this new path, but that Eleanor Roosevelt quote that I love has been running through my mind. "Do one thing every day that scares you." So I'm going to do it. Follow this new path. Have fun and enjoy the experience.
As for the details, I am going to train to be a docent, first learning to man the stations that are scattered throughout the museum. There are many different ones relating to the permanent and touring exhibitions. First up I'm going to start with the Da Vinci exhibit and then move on to the Gem exhibit, maybe even Geopalooza. There are so many different areas of the museum and touring exhibits that if you get bored in one area you can move on to something else. The hours are also very flexible. People basically work in 2 hours shifts although I will probably do more than that during the summer. But with a 2 hour shift this is something that I can continue even after the school year starts if I can find the time. They also have wonderful benefits for their docents including free admission to just about everything, free parking, book clubs, newsletters, field trips, special lectures, the list goes on and on. So this isn't exactly what I was expecting, but I think it is actually better. That's the problem with expectations. Sometimes they take us down the wrong path.
This summer is going to be fun.
